Women in IT: Yulduz Tech Awards Ceremony Highlights

On December 24, 2024, the Ministry of Digital Technologies of Uzbekistan, in collaboration with IT Park Uzbekistan, hosted the inaugural Yulduz Tech Awards — a landmark event for women in the field of information technology. This significant occasion recognized 25 women and girls for their outstanding achievements in technology.

The First Deputy Minister of Digital Technologies, Oleg Pekos, stated in his address:

"We are firmly committed to enhancing the participation of women in the IT sector. Uzbekistan, a nation abundant in talented youth and dedicated to technological progress, and our creative young women stand at the forefront of innovation. Empowering women in the field of technology is not only a matter of national pride but also an investment in the future. Together, we will foster an inclusive and innovative society, where every girl has the opportunity to make a contribution to shaping the digital world."

“We are committed to enhancing the participation of women in the IT industry. Uzbekistan is home to a wealth of talented youth, and our ambitious, creative women stand at the forefront of innovation. Empowering young women in technology is a matter of national pride. By dismantling barriers, we pave the way for women to assume leadership roles in the tech industry. Supporting women in IT is an investment in our collective future, yielding benefits for society as a whole. Together, we can build an inclusive and innovative future where every woman and girl has the opportunity to shape the digital world,” stated Rustam Karimjonov, Deputy Minister of Digital Technologies for Education.

Uzbekistan has made notable progress in promoting the involvement of women in IT. The nation is a global leader in online education on the Coursera platform, with women comprising 49% of all students. Initiatives such as One Million Uzbek Coders, IT-iste’dod, and reimbursement programs for international IT certifications provide tangible opportunities for the youth to access world-class education. Furthermore, Uzbekistan’s ranking in the Gender Equality and Governance Index (GEGI) has improved significantly, ascending from 103rd to 52nd place — an achievement facilitated by sustained efforts to support women in IT and STEM fields.

“We take immense pride in the emergence of a new generation of talented women in our country, actively contributing to advancements in information technology. Supporting women in IT is a crucial focus of our state policy, and we remain committed to fostering opportunities for their professional development and successful careers,” remarked Kamola Sobirova, Advisor to the Minister of Digital Technologies.

The event placed significant emphasis on networking among participants and facilitating the exchange of expertise among STEM professionals. The ceremony served as an excellent platform for advancing education, mentorship, and career support for women in IT.

“It is immensely gratifying to know that the Yulduz Tech Awards empowers women who are breaking new ground in IT. This initiative is a vital component of our strategic vision to expand access to technology and innovation. We are confident that with each passing year, more women will ascend to leadership roles in the tech sector, and we stand ready to support them on this journey,” emphasized Jamila Khalibaeva, Global Marketing Director of IT Park Uzbekistan.

The Yulduz Tech Awards has established itself as a landmark event with strong potential to become an annual tradition, fostering the continued development and empowerment of women in the field of information technology.

The event was organized by the Ministry of Digital Technologies, with the support of IT Park Uzbekistan, and in partnership with Yandex Uzbekistan, TBC Uzbekistan, Korzinka, ZTE, Click, Qand, the IT Education Association, Women in Tech Uzbekistan, Lerna, and the GAP and IT Ladies communities.
